Your computer speakers will allow you to listen live.  You will need a computer microphone if you want to ask questions and talk live with others in the VoIP room.  You can also use the text chat feature which enables you to send messages (private and public) to the moderator enabling you to ask private questions which can then be addressed anonymously.

Internet Speed Check

A minimum of a stable 56 kb is all that is needed.  Test your internet connection speed by clicking on the Speakeasy Speed TEst icon below.

VoIP Trouble Shooting

  1. Are you using an Internet Explorer browser? Version 5.0 or higher?
  2. Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher is also needed as your default browser.
Note: If you are using AOL as your Internet provider, you can connect with AOL but then launch Internet Explorer to enter the VoIP room.
If you are using AOL as your Internet provider, you can connect with AOL but then launch Internet Explorer to enter the VoIP room.

If you do not have Internet Explorer and use the AOL browser, your microphone will mostly likely not work, but you should be able to hear just fine.

Foxfire does seem to work, however time will tell....

  3. XP users - did the system ask you to allow an Active X setting?  If so, you will need to click "allow” in order to enter the VoIP room.  Additionally check your ActiveX Settings here.
  1. For any user not getting a response when filling out the VoIP room entrance form, please click to check you Active X settings.
  1. Firewalls:  Certain firewalls may require you to "allow" the Voice Software particularly the Windows XP and Norton firewalls.  Look for one for the following: ivocalize, chatterbox client, tcconference

  2. If you are having microphone problems, visit Mr. Echo to test the volume and clarity.

A Few Extras

We suggest (particularly if you are on dial up) that you close all programs (including email) while you are in the VoIP room.  You might consider disabling your virus scanner (providing your email client is closed) during the class time only.   Turn off extra programs in your lower right corner “sys tray” that are not needed.  These programs consume a great deal of computer resources and will affect the quality of your receiving and sending of voice transmission.  If you have any questions about how to turn off or close programs, please email us.
